Why Dickinson Remained Single

I ran from you and hid
My heart had closed its door
I didn’t love you anymore
In truth I probably did
But that feeling I’d ignore

I returned to my past
To beloved playground swing
Where I first heard love sing
And my heart pounded fast
I soared on eagle’s wing

Synchronized flight
With the girl next to me
Oh–sweet and shy Becky
Conversation was light
It was the best place to be

Watching my feet kick the sky
Sneaking glances her way
Memorizing this day
So that same night I could try
To rewind the tape and press play

But this time the swing was unoccupied
And the playground had changed
I thought I was deranged
A seesaw born where jungle gym died
There you sat all pleasantly arranged

I sat across to make one two
You ascended to a new height
My heart too heavy to make this right
I can’t get over you
Do you have any insight?

a playful lyric about a painful topic…i like that contrast as a whole…this you could cut afew of the ‘i’s and condense your flow a bit….

Thanks–I wrote this a while ago and haven’t been back to edit it, so I totally agree that the flow is awkward. I’ll see what I can do to fix that 🙂

    This is my favorite part:
“I ran from you and hid
My heart had closed its door
    I didn’t love you anymore
    In truth I probably did”

I’m not sure why,- except the obvious: the subject matter, but there’s more to it than that – but your poem reminded me of Jean-Honoré Fragonard’s painting of The Girl on the Swing. At any rate, I thought it that good.

Whoa, I love that! I had never seen the painting, but my poem does have a lot of similarities–the swing, the dueling love interests, the secrecy of it all, and perhaps a bit of cupid’s whimsy. Thanks so much!

Oh lamentable indeed–but there’s still time 🙂 A four part poem? How…not sure what the right word is, but it’s something along the lines of awesome.

This poem is very lyrical and visual. I could see your legs kicking the sky! Very nice.
