A Singular Definition

Loneliness is being a stray dog on the wrong side of the fence

Until you’ve tasted loneliness you’ve never gotten drunk.

Loneliness is a large party of acquaintances;
It is the aisle seat in a movie theatre;
It is a dark closet with old sweaters.

Loneliness is phone numbers with no answer;
It is a silent doorbell;
It is big thoughts and small talk.

Loneliness is long nights and tired days;
It is writing with water on a chalkboard;
It is a molten masquerade.

Loneliness is everyone’s mad at you
And sometimes you are too.

Loneliness is unshared beauty;
It is multiple mental conversations
And mental five-car pileups.

Loneliness is an unconscious stutter;
It is pages of crumpled diaries;
It is a punch to the gut.

Loneliness is the Berlin wall;
It is an early fall
And a cold winter.

      Thanks! I actually wrote this in response to the NaBloPoMo prompt at The Daily Post. I was a little late, but the question was when was the last time you felt really truly alone? I didn’t actually get around to answering the question, as I realized before I answered it, I’d have to define what being really truly alone actually means. Thus, I wrote this poem, and using it as my premise I’d conclude that I’ve felt this lonely but once in my life, and it was terrifying, but fortunately only temporary. 🙂
